"World Heritage" refers to landmarks or areas that have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, scientific, or natural significance. These sites are legally protected by international treaties and are considered valuable to the collective interests of humanity.
There are two main types of World Heritage Sites:
Cultural Heritage Sites – These include historic buildings, cities, monuments, and archaeological sites (e.g., the Pyramids of Egypt, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu).
Natural Heritage Sites – These include natural features, landscapes, and ecosystems (e.g., the Great Barrier Reef, Yellowstone National Park, the Galápagos Islands).
Some sites are also Mixed Heritage Sites, combining cultural and natural significance.
Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)
is all about the living traditions and practices that communities pass down through generations. It’s not something you can touch like a building or a monument — it’s more about what people do, say, make, or believe that forms part of their cultural identity.
Traditional and contemporary – it evolves over time.
Community-based – it’s recognized by communities, not imposed from above.
Representative – it reflects cultural diversity.
Transmitted from generation to generation – through teaching, participation, and shared experience.
Constantly recreated – as communities adapt it to their lives and environment.
